Core Maths (AQA)
We study Core Maths to strengthen our quantitative and problem-solving skills, applying mathematical reasoning to everyday situations. Core Maths encourages us to interpret data, evaluate evidence, and make informed decisions based on logical analysis. By exploring contexts such as personal finance, statistics, and real-world problem-solving, students gain confidence in using mathematics practically while appreciating its ability to reveal patterns, trends, and solutions in the world around us.
“Statistical thinking will one day be as necessary for efficient citizenship as the ability to read and write.” — H.G. Wells
Core Mathematics is designed to extend students’ mathematical skills beyond GCSE, offering a practical alternative to the full A Level route. The course focuses on applying mathematical ideas to real-life problems, whether in everyday situations, work, or further study — from interpreting statistics and understanding probability to analysing risk, managing personal finances, and modelling real-world scenarios. Students also explore topics such as percentages and ratios, correlation and regression, estimation, and mathematical arguments in context. Core Mathematics fosters logical thinking, careful analysis, and confidence in handling data, while also valuing clarity of reasoning and creative problem-solving. Core Maths is strongly recommended as a complementary (fourth) course for students who are not taking A Level Mathematics but are interested in pursuing A Levels such as Biology, Chemistry, Economics and Geography. By engaging with mathematics in meaningful and purposeful ways, students acquire skills that are immediately relevant and rewarding. The course is highly regarded by universities and employers as evidence of a student’s ability to apply mathematical reasoning accurately, insightfully, and effectively.
