Appeals Process

THIS INFORMATION IS FOR SEPT 2023 ENTRY. IT WILL BE UPDATED FOR SEPT 2024 ENTRY CLOSER TO APPLICATIONS CLOSING.

If you wish to appeal against the Sixth Form's decision for September 2023 entry, please request an appeal form by 4pm on Monday 20th March 2023 by emailing enquiries@harriswestminstersixthform.org.uk.

Completed forms should be posted to the Head of Admissions at Harris Westminster Sixth Form, 11 Tothill Street, London, SW1H 9LH or scanned and emailed to enquiries@harriswestminstersixthform.org.uk. Forms must be received by the Sixth Form by 4pm on Thursday 6th April 2023 and an appeal hearing will be arranged. An independent appeals panel will hear all appeals.

The appeals will be heard, in private, by an Independent Appeal Panel. The Clerk to the Appeal Panel will make an appointment within a reasonable time; Appeals may be made in English or the Parents’/Carers’ first language.

  • Only one appeal per application is allowed.
  • Appeals are conducted in person, and you may bring a friend.

You can appeal against a decision and your appeal could be successful if:

  • The admissions arrangements have not been properly followed.
  • The admission criteria are not legal.
  • The decision to refuse a place was unreasonable (the decision about this is made by balancing your needs against those of all the other students who have applied and their right to be treated fairly).

If you are appealing against a decision based on you having a bad day/exam/ or, if you feel the score does not represent your ability, then these appeals will be generally refused.

The Appeal Hearing

The Sixth Form will arrange for an Independent Appeals Panel to consider the Sixth Form's reasons for refusal and your reasons for wanting to attend the Sixth Form.

The Panel will consist of 3 people (2 will have education experience and one will be an independent person with no education experience).

The Panel will consider the case put forward by you and the Sixth Form. They must consider the admission arrangements for the Sixth Form and the reasons why you want to attend that particular school. The Panel must exercise its discretion by balancing the weight of your argument (for wanting to attend) against the Sixth Form's reasons for refusal i.e. the prejudice that one more student would cause to the education of the students already offered and the Health and Safety of all the students already attending the Sixth Form, also taking into account the Sixth Form's published admission arrangements.

The decision of the Independent Appeals Panel is binding on the admissions authority and the Parents.
